Documentary
featuring The Homecoming Project Wins Annie E. Casey Medal for Meritorious
Journalism
The American RadioWorks'
documentary “Wanted: Parents” that aired on Minnesota Public Radio on
November 5, 2007 recently won the 2008 Annie E. Casey Medal for Meritorious
Journalism. The show followed Homecoming Project youth, Chris and Amanda,
who are looking for a family before they age out of the foster care system.
Jen Braun, Recruitment Specialist with The Homecoming Project, was critical
in connecting the producers with information and people, and is featured in
the documentary. "Wanted: Parents" merited the Annie E. Casey Medal for
"masterfully reported, compelling stories that cut through compassion
fatigue on socially significant topics; demonstrated enterprise and thorough
research; and showed evidence of impact." The documentary was produced by
Catherine Winter and Ellen Guettler of American RadioWorks, and broadcast
nationally on National Public Radio stations.

About MARN
The Minnesota Adoption Resource Network (MARN) creates and supports
lifelong nurturing families for children needing permanency and advocates
for the interests of adoptees.
MARN is a non-profit organization committed to permanence for children. While not a child-placement agency, MARN contributes by:
-
Helping adoption agencies recruit and train prospective families
-
Providing continuing education, advocacy and support to people whose
lives are influenced by issues of adoption
-
Heightening the visibility of children in the foster care system who
are in need of permanent families

We Believe
- As a society, we must be very mindful and careful regarding the care
of children, from conception to adulthood. Traumas and exposures
experienced in childhood will have a life-long impact.
- All children need to grow up in families. Only in a family can a
child or adolescent learn how to develop a sense of connection and
belonging that will help them form future healthy relationships. There
is no substitute for a family.
- Families formed through adoption are uniquely different from
families formed through birth. Healthy adoptive families celebrate and
acknowledge such differences.
- A permanent family can be a healing place for a wounded child. In a
committed, nurturing family, the child can become an adult who succeeds
in life.
- The act of searching for one's birth origins is not pathological,
but rather is a natural human quest to answer a basic question of
identity: Who am I?
We Provide
- A variety of initiatives to identify and to recruit potential
adoptive parents
- Information concerning the adoption process
- Training for potential adoptive parents and foster parents
- Management of the State Adoption Exchange (an online database that
links children with prospective adoptive parents)
- Minnesota's Waiting Children, an annual publication with
descriptions and photos of children waiting for permanent families
- Educational and therapeutic resources addressing some special needs
commonly experienced by children who grow up apart from the families
into which they were born
- Continuing education and support to people whose lives are impacted
by adoption
