(November 2017) To many foster and adopted parents, disobedience or outright defiance are the most taxing issues they contend with. They can be hot buttons. This webinar will address children’s non-compliance and defiance. Non-compliance is not following the rules or requests from a parent or teacher. Defiance is angry protest and opposition to rules or requests from any authority figure. It often comes with a dose of disrespect. With numerous examples, we will talk about what causes these problems in the first place. Exposure to harsh parenting will be identified as a key culprit. Following that we will address cool-headed, non-punitive ways to encourage cooperation in children and youth.
Dr. Richard Delaney is an internationally known clinical psychologist, speaker and consultant to foster, kinship, and adoptive parents and programs. Dr. Delaney has given several hundred presentations in the throughout the United States, Canada, and the Bermuda Islands. Dr. Delaney is currently the principal investigator of Foster Parent College (www.fosterparentcollege.com), an on-line resource for foster, kinship and adoptive parents. This site is endorsed by many child welfare agencies in the U.S. and Canada, and it is rated at the California Evidence Based Clearinghouse in Child Welfare.
