(April 2021)  For children of color, cultural practices, such as hair care, can provide a source of normalcy while they are recovering from trauma. During this training, we will discover the importance of hair care in the Black community. We also will create hair care recipes and experience a live, in-person hair care demonstration.

Naijean Bernard, PhD, first started her work with children and youth over 20 years ago as a school psychologist in Washington DC. Upon moving to Texas in 2005, she worked in juvenile correctional facilities and the Texas child welfare system.  As a graduate student at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, she completed her doctorate which centered on a comparative analysis of racial identity throughout the African diaspora. Naijean is currently a full-time entrepreneur and enjoys public speaking on the topic of racial identity issues affecting children of color in the child welfare system.
