#20220601 WEBINAR: Family Matters: A Conversation About Kinship, Family, and Culture
(June 2022) Nefertiti Austin, author of bestseller Motherhood So White: A Memoir of Race, Gender, and Parenting in America, will share her journey as a single Black woman to adoption. She will focus on kinship care, which includes extended family and close family friend placements as the least disruptive type of out-of-home care. Austin will explain the cultural nuances of kinship care, especially in the Black community who has a long standing distrust of the foster care system. She will also share the joys and struggles of being a single adoptive parent, and educating her Black children in white spaces.
Author and memoirist, Nefertiti Austin writes about the erasure of diverse voices in motherhood in the critically acclaimed Motherhood So White: A Memoir of Race, Gender and Parenting in America. Her work around this topic has appeared in “The New York Times”, “The Washington Post”, “The Nation”, “Gen Medium”, and many other online, digital and print publications. She was the subject of an article on race and adoption in “The Atlantic” and appeared on numerous shows/podcasts and radio programs, including “The Today Show”, “1A with Joshua Johnson”, and NPR. Nefertiti is the proud adoptive mother of two children and lives in Los Angeles, Ca.
