Dr. Laura Lofy is a licensed psychologist as well as a licensed school psychologist. She holds a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota and a masters in maternal and child health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As an undergraduate, Laura studied international relations.

Laura specializes in working with children and adolescents with histories of complex developmental trauma, especially those who have experienced abuse, neglect, abandonment, domestic violence, family disruption, and/or attachment challenges.  Laura works with many children from these hard places who have found their forever families through domestic or international adoption. She also loves to work with children and adolescents who are in transition, either living in foster homes or other out-of-home placements.

Laura is trained in a number of treatment approaches designed to help children who need help processing trauma and building healthy relationships with their caregivers.  These include:

• Experiential Play Therapy: a child-centered, nondirective play therapy model
• TheraPlay: a directive, attachment-focused play therapy model
• Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP): an attachment-focused, family talk therapy model
• Filial Therapy: a play-based therapy model that involves teaching parents how to support their children through child-centered play.

Laura often complements these primary treatment approaches by incorporating expressive arts, trust-based relational intervention (TBRI), mindfulness, social and self-regulation skills training (e.g., the ALERT program)., as well as by drawing from other therapy models (e.g., somatic experiencing, person-centered therapy, positive psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy).

Laura is also trained in psychological evaluations, and is able to provide:

• Pre-adoption parent psychological evaluation

Laura has experience in a variety of educational, nonprofit, clinical and international settings, including, public and private schools, Head Start, and nonprofit and private health centers. In addition to working with children with trauma histories, she has experience working with children with developmental disabilities (e.g., autism, ADHD), learning disorders, and mental health diagnoses (e.g., anxiety, depression). Having trained and worked as a school psychologist, Laura has a solid understanding of special education and can help support parents regarding educational decision making.

Laura spent five years living and working as the Director of Youth Services for the Half the Sky Foundation and a Psychologist for LIH Olivia’s Place Pediatric Therapy Center. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. She is also the mother of three internationally-adopted children.

Laura works as an independent contractor with Family Connections in Minnetonka and Ballard Clinic in Edina.  She also has a private practice through which she can support parents using tele-mental health, consultation with schools, and occasional home visits on occasion.
