Dr. Kroupina is a clinical child psychologist and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. She is the Director of the Birth to Three Clinic which specializes in mental health and developmental services for children aged 0 to 3 who have experienced early adversity, trauma or toxic stress.

Her chief interest is building a research-based clinical practice that includes assessment and intervention for children who experienced traumatic stress, including loss of biological parents, orphanage stay, abuse and/or neglect.  She was awarded a Zero To Three fellowship to develop this program for internationally adopted children.

Current funded research includes a study on nutritional status of recently arrived internationally adopted children and collaborative work as a co-investigator regarding recovery from early life stress in children adopted from institutions and neurobehavioral correlates of early deprivation.

Philosophy of Practice: Comprehensive whole child approach, research informed clinical practice. Based on understanding of normal developmental. For children with history of early adversity it is critical to understand trajectory of their adjustment in a new environment. Long-term follow-up clinical model, based on what we learned about brain development and early experience. Relationship is the main context for development of a child with early adverse experience.
